eTA Canada

An eTA (electronic travel authorization) is a permission to fly to or through Canada that you apply for online. Before you apply, check what you need to travel to Canada to find out whether you can apply for an eTA. You fill in the form on the official Government of Canada eTA page and pay $7 CAD. Just so you know: this is an independent information site, and we have no connection to the Government of Canada. Applications go through the official website only.

Who Needs an eTA?

You can apply for an eTA if your passport is from a visa-exempt country or territory, meaning its citizens can visit Canada without a visitor visa.

Two groups don't need an eTA at all:

As of 26 May 2026, certain citizens of Indonesia and Malaysia who meet the requirements may be eligible to apply for an eTA instead of a visitor visa for flights to Canada. Already have a valid visitor visa? You can keep travelling with it until it runs out.

What to Gather Before You Begin

The online form will not save your progress, so it is best to collect everything first and do it in one sitting. The official site lists the items you need for the form and payment:

  • a valid passport; check the eligibility requirements, including the conditions for citizens of Indonesia and Malaysia
  • a credit or debit card to pay the fee
  • a valid email address

The form also asks you a few questions. If you are more comfortable in another language, the official site has descriptions of each field in several languages, including Dutch and Brazilian Portuguese.

How to Apply, One Step at a Time

  1. Go to the official online form and complete it in one go. There is no way to save it and finish later.
  2. Answer the few questions the form asks, with your passport beside you.
  3. Once the form is done, use a card to cover the $7 CAD fee. The fee is not refundable, so give your answers one more look before paying.
  4. See the official page for what to do after you apply.

How Long Does It Take?

Right now the Government of Canada's processing times tool shows about five minutes for an eTA. That's a typical time rather than a promise, because the government may need more details from you after you apply.

The official page explains what happens if more details are needed, and its FAQ covers when you might need to apply again.

Common Problems When Applying

On the official eTA page there is a section with answers to common issues that come up during the application. If the form gives you trouble or a question confuses you, start there before you submit another application, since the fee is not refunded.

Temporary Ebola Measures

Canada brought in temporary measures in response to Ebola disease, and they now run through 27 November 2026. The current details are on the official apply page, so check there before your trip if this could apply to you.
