PEI PNP

PEI PNP stands for Prince Edward Island Provincial Nominee Program. Through it, the province can pick candidates and nominate them for Canadian permanent residency. Most streams focus on people already working or studying on the Island, and the process begins with a simple online profile instead of a full application.

PEI PNP Streams

When the province nominates you, it is formally backing your permanent residency case. The Province of Prince Edward Island names these ways to get there:

  • Critical Worker stream: for those already in full-time jobs in PEI.
  • Skilled Worker stream: for those with a current job at a PEI company.
  • International Graduate stream: for those holding a degree from a public post-secondary school on the Island.
  • PEI Express Entry: a nomination tied to Canada's federal Express Entry platform.
  • Work Permit Stream for business: for anyone hoping to invest in and operate a PEI business, under the Business Impact Category.

There is also a program selector from the province that points you to programs you might qualify for.

Setting Up an Expression of Interest Profile

This kind of profile is not the same as an application. It simply lets PEI know you want to be considered, as the Office of Immigration explains. Anyone hoping to use the Business Impact Category, the Express Entry route, or the Labour Impact Category has to create an account and profile first.

Profiles are free to create and remain valid for six months. Everything in yours has to be true and provable. If something changes before an invitation arrives, you can edit the profile yourself. If it changes afterwards, you have to notify the Office, and this could influence how your file is decided.

Who Gets Invited?

PEI ranks profiles to surface the candidates most likely to fit the Island's economic and labour market needs. Strategic priorities are one factor. These are skills that address labour needs in PEI right now. The Workforce Application Guide covers the points in more detail.

The province also points out some limits:

  • How many invitations go out depends on federal immigration allocations, how many applications come in, and what the provincial labour market needs.
  • People in sales and service jobs are unlikely to be drawn right now.
  • Under Express Entry, PEI gives an edge to candidates already living and working in the province with a qualifying Island employer.

By 2026, the province had issued 1,483 invitations under the Labour and Express Entry streams, while the Business Work Permit Entrepreneur stream saw none.

How Does PEI Express Entry Work?

The federal government runs Express Entry for its core economic immigration programs. To get a nomination through PEI Express Entry, you must qualify under at least one of those programs. If you are in Canada, your status here must be legal. For instance, a study permit holder who is not actually studying does not qualify.

Sometimes you must prove that you have worked continuously, full-time, for nine straight months for the PEI employer backing your application. Your work permit must also have a minimum of four months remaining when you submit your profile.

A nomination from PEI boosts your chances of getting the federal Invitation to Apply, which is what allows you to send in a full permanent residency application. Here is what recent federal Provincial Nominee Program rounds showed:

What To Do Once PEI Invites You

  1. Check your email. The invitation contains your file number plus instructions for submitting your file.
  2. Fill out the application forms, since the province needs your personal information and paperwork.
  3. Ask your employer to fill in PEIW-02, the form for a PEI workforce job offer, since your file needs their section as well.
  4. Fill in PEIW-03 only when someone is acting as your representative; it is the Use of Representative Form.
  5. Pay the $300 CAD fee. It applies only to successful candidates, is non-refundable, and is not requested otherwise.

How Long Does Federal Processing Take?

After your nomination, the federal government takes over your permanent residency application. The latest IRCC estimates look like this:

Kind of PNP applicationCurrent wait time
Express Entry routeAround 7 months
Base stream (outside Express Entry)Around 13 months

Keep in mind these are estimates and they change as months pass.
